What Is a Root Canal?
Dr. Amelia Aristodemo explains root canal therapy and how it allows us to preserve abscessed natural teeth in this educational video.
A root canal is a dental procedure performed to treat an infected or inflamed pulp, which is the soft tissue located inside the tooth. During a root canal procedure, the dentist or endodontist carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and then seals it to prevent further infection.
The goal of a root canal is to save the natural tooth, which may otherwise need to be extracted if left untreated. By removing the infected pulp and sealing the tooth, a root canal procedure can effectively relieve pain, eliminate infection, and restore the tooth’s health and functionality.
Root canal therapy is a common and highly successful procedure, with millions of teeth being treated and saved each year through this method. It is often recommended when a tooth is severely decayed, infected, or damaged due to trauma.
