Causes of Gum Disease
Understand the causes of gum disease and how to prevent it with Dr. Amelia Aristodemo’s expertise in this helpful patient education video.
Gum disease can be attributed to a variety of factors, with genetics playing a significant role for some individuals. Lifestyle choices also greatly influence gum health; a diet lacking in essential nutrients, smoking or using smokeless tobacco, and excessive alcohol consumption can all contribute to the development of gum disease.
Medical conditions such as diabetes can exacerbate the risk, as can bruxism, which is the grinding or clenching of teeth. Furthermore, poor oral hygiene practices, including inadequate brushing and flossing, along with infrequent dental visits and professional cleanings, are key contributors to the onset and progression of gum disease.
