What Is an Immediate Denture?
In this video, Dr. Amelia Aristodemo discusses how immediate dentures quickly restore function and aesthetics to your smile after tooth extractions.
An immediate denture is a removable dental appliance that is placed in the mouth immediately after tooth extraction. It serves as a temporary solution to replace missing teeth while the gums and underlying bone heal from the extraction procedure.
For example, if a patient undergoes surgery to remove all of their teeth, they would receive an immediate denture on the same day as the extractions. This allows the patient to leave the dental office with a set of teeth, preventing them from having to go without teeth during the healing process.
While an immediate denture provides immediate replacement of missing teeth and restores some level of function and aesthetics, it is considered a temporary fix. Within approximately six months after tooth extraction, the gums and bone undergo significant changes as they heal, leading to alterations in the fit and stability of the denture.
As a result, patients may need to have their immediate denture adjusted, relined, or replaced with a conventional denture once the healing process is complete. A conventional denture is custom-made after the gums have fully healed, providing a more precise fit and better long-term comfort and function.
