What Is An Overdenture?
In this video, Dr. Amelia Aristodemo discusses the stability and retention provided by overdenture prostheses.
An overdenture is a type of dental prosthesis that sits on the gums but is supported and anchored in place by dental implants. Unlike traditional dentures, which rely solely on suction or adhesive for retention, an overdenture is securely attached to dental implants, providing greater stability and retention.
The process of getting an overdenture typically involves placing dental implants into the jawbone and allowing them to integrate and fuse with the surrounding bone tissue. Once the implants have fully healed and become stable, the overdenture is fabricated and attached to the implants using special attachments or clips.
While an overdenture still contains a significant amount of acrylic or plastic material in the mouth, its retention and stability are significantly improved compared to traditional dentures. This can lead to enhanced comfort, improved chewing ability, and increased confidence for individuals who wear overdentures.
