What Are Full Dentures?

In this video, Dr. Amelia Aristodemo discusses traditional upper and lower dentures and how to ensure their longevity with proper care.

Full dentures are dental appliances designed to replace all of the teeth on either the upper or lower arch of the mouth. These appliances consist of an acrylic base that mimics the appearance of gums, with artificial teeth made of either plastic or porcelain attached to the base. Full dentures are utilized to restore both the esthetics and functionality lost due to the absence of natural teeth.

In terms of retention, upper dentures typically stay in place through suction created by the roof of the mouth. However, lower dentures have less natural retention and support due to the strong muscles of the tongue and cheeks. As a result, adhesive is often used to help keep both upper and lower dentures securely in place and prevent movement while eating or speaking.

It’s important to note that full dentures should be removed daily for cleaning and maintenance. Proper oral hygiene practices are essential for maintaining the health of the gums and preventing oral health issues.
